Kyane Howland
Artist Statement
I’m after authenticity. To bravely not look away from anything.
Photography’s greatest gift to me is how it slows me down enough to notice secrets tucked in sunlight and sand, as ice melts, as children twirl, as driftwood dances at the shoreline of a Great Lake I love.
The hours after I take the photo become crucial and exciting. I filter colors and crop edges to get at a resonance. I want colors to make the sky sing. I beckon the infinite to surface from the finite. Distance becomes intimate.
I once was a hospice nurse, and still feel for a pulse when taking the photo. I respect the mystery that appears then disappears too soon.
I love to greet the new day and listen to light take on a one of a kind cadence. Appreciation and awe fill me when I identify an angle that suddenly angels the space over a branch and shadow. I’m fascinated how the color blue says hello to yellow and how gray always seems to say goodbye. I never tire of trying to catch a hundred shades of peridot green somersaulting in treetops.
Enigmatically, I find my humanity at the edge of elements right before a storm, the birth of a rainbow, and break of wave.
Photography is the way I dive deeper into life. I swim mythic moments, as if I’m a mermaid navigating emotion with a sense of direction and joy.
Photos are poems that sometimes happen spontaneously, when I take time to notice light kissing life. I'm reminded we're OK and incandescent, despite pain.
I love to catch the world winking at me, and feel I’ve succeeded when a photo reveals a dappled laugh."
